The main route is New Delhi-Modinagar-Meerut by-pass-Muzaffarnagar by-pass-Roorkee-Haridwar-Rishikesh-Shivpuri. The total distance is 239 KM and should take you around six hours if you leave well before peak hour traffic kicks in, i.e., around 5:00 AM. Any later than that, and it will take you around eight hours - which includes pit stops for breakfast/lunch and restroom breaks. The highway is pretty clean with a double lane most of the way until you reach Purkazi. Pit stops for food - we recommend the new Cheetal Grand bang on the highway, at the Khatauli intersection. This is on the new highway, NH-58. If you're looking for the original old favourite Cheetal Grand, then you will need to take a slight detour. Just follow the signages - won't take you off for more than 15 minutes. Still well worth it - the best tandoori chicken, rajma-chaval and aloo parathas this side of the universe! And their chicken sandwiches aren't bad either! The cherry on the cake is of course their pristine clean loos. Another decent pit stop on the new highway is the Namaste Holiday Complex which has Haldirams, McDonalds and Costa Coffee. At Roorkee you'll find the Polaris Hotel, its on your right on the main highway itself - can't really miss it. The drive from Rishikesh to Shivpuri is all up hill so you really want to get here before dark - and will take you around 30 - 45 minutes. If you're planning to catch a taxi, it will cost you around Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,700 for a round trip. Bull's Retreat is on the right side of the road, so just keep an eye out for it. There's an Indian Oil petrol pump right opposite.
